Lycos UK

7th Dec 2006 stk

The Problem: Lycos U.K., a subdivision of Lycos Europe, wanted to convert their directory pages to be XHTML, CSS and WAI compliant - at a reasonable cost.

The Solution: Hire AstonishMe! to convert over 100,000 statically-created, individually-maintained and XHTML/CSS/WAI-invalid pages into a single, web-standards template. This allows sweeping, site-wide changes to be as easy as modifying a single template! In addition, we converted static pages to be dynamically served, utilizing an innovative cache system which optimizes speed and guarantees successful page retrieval. A low deposit, plus ongoing payments (based on directory sales and page views) saves Lycos money over their previous solution. Better, faster, cheaper - Lycos is impressed!

The Challenge: Building an enterprise-level, XML-based query system database from scratch. Configuring a dedicated web-server (and backup server) to withstand a high volume of traffic. Designing and coding a single, PHP-based, XHTML/CSS-valid, WAI-508-compliant template which handles every possible directory listing configuration. (Added challenge: 24-hours before the project deadline, completely re-design the layout and graphics, in order to match a just-released, Lycos site design!)

Good Boating

The Mock Up
Good Boating Mock-UpGood Boating Mockup Page: When complete, this site will be a portal for two commercial boating companies, several sponsored blogs, a community forum & a boater blogging community - - all powered by b2evolution.

The Problem: Owners of two boating companies in the mid-western United States wanted to enhance their existing, static commercial websites. They wanted to offer more relevant content, achieve higher page rankings, build customer loyalty and increase sales.

The Solution: Hire AstonishMe! to convert the static commercial sites into dynamic blogs and integrate them into a regional boating portal site (with boater blogs, professionally written articles and a community forum). The portal site will offer a wealth of information for the region, including relevant content and an active community of boating enthusiasts. Page rank, search engine optimization, potential customers, sales and customer satisfaction will all benefit.

The Challenge: Integration, custom coding, black/gold site design constraints, co-branding, public blogging, forum and multi-million dollar boat inventory database ... this project has it all. The first step was to design and build a mock up of what the b2evolution-driven, integrated portal site would look like.

When we completed some intermediate blog integration work on Ohio Boating, the client had this to say:

I am excited as hell to see the completed site but I'm so in love with our intermediate site that I might fight to keep it when it's time to roll it in. The blues blend beautifully and the shadow affect is classy and adds to the mood. Yup, we might duke it out on that one... :>)

Because we had already roughed out the basic design of the new, integrated Black/Gold "Good Boating" portal site, we were pretty certain that Ann would really like the new look. I was so certain, that I made this (rather cocky) claim:

It means a lot to us, as the designers/programmers, to hear that we're going to have to duke it out with you over the design! We're so certain that you'll love the new layout that we're prepared to bet you $1,000 -you won't even consider fighting to keep the interim one. ;)

Unfortunately, she didn't commit to the bet, otherwise we'd be a tad wealthier. ;)

Yes, it is a good thing I didn't commit!!

I can't begin to say how you folks continue to uhm, well - astonish me! I have been circulating the link of the mock up page around to the staff and to selected viewers and it is unanimous praise all the way around. 'Exciting', 'unique', 'gorgeous' are some of the words feeding back. We are really going to have one of the most unique sites of it's kind in our industry and I can't thank you enough for investing the imagination that is making this one outstanding endeavor.

William Juan,

Software and Tools

3rd Mar 2006 Danny
A New Look
Software and ToolsSoftware & Tools: This is the main blog, which includes posts from all of the sub-blogs. Each link in the upper left goes to a sub-blog with a different header graphic and color scheme.

The Problem: The owner of a website showcasing news, tips & commentary about software wanted a stylized, 3-column design that provided an integrated, but differing color scheme for each of the eight technology blogs.

The Solution: Making a custom skin that exceeded the client's expectations. The design is elegant and offers unique features: author index, collapsible categories, clean search form, custom icons and CSS image rollover (for blog descriptions).

The Challenge: Offering an elegant, integrated, custom design at an affordable price.

Ohio Boating

Integrated Blog
ohioboatingINTEGRATION: The Ohio Boating website's new, integrated front page. Old blog links have were moved below the header image and styled to blend with the existing design. CSS drop shadows were added to the entries. (That's an AstonishMe! exclusive, in which we'll showcase the technique in an upcoming member's exclusive CSS "How-to" entry).

The Problem: "We have a nicely designed, 10-page website, but the designer doesn't know anything about blogs or PHP. His pages are difficult to update and most of our content is in the blog, which is just one link button on the front page. Can you help?"

The Solution: "Sure. We recommend integrating the blog skin with the current site design and move the blog to the front page, replacing the existing (relatively static) content."

The Challenges: Working on a live site, maintaining all internal links, doing the work as soon as possible and ensuring that all old, inbound links point to the correct, new location.

Oh my goodness, had no idea you had posted this.

Great place for me to bestow my gratitude as well as accolades for a job exceedingly well done.Trying to communicate this concept to many designers met with resistance, from some outright contempt, some had no idea what blogs were, - many provided dire warnings that I would be lost to search engines and traffic would die - and finally, out of frustration, I had to settle for a pretty site that chained me to the site designer whenever i wanted to update the front pages (I am HTML/CSS illiterate to the max) and it served to force the reader to jump through hoops to get to the regularly updated blog content.

An intrinsic component to a blog's viability as a business tool is it's immediacy, authentic content and the possibility to interact. The idea of making blogs 'the water' the business site 'swims in', if you will (sorry - I have nautical on the brain), seems a natural expression of blogs as opposed to their being appended like some clumsy hanger-on to an existing static site.

I'd been using B2 on a personal site when I took on the job of writing content for ohioboating and I knew B2's flexibility and ease of use would serve the concept of creating a boating community well. Cruising B2 forums for clues on changes I wanted to do, I had the fortune to communicate with Scott and long story made short - he was the designer/developer I had been looking for all along.

It was an incredible relief to have finally found someone willing to imagine and invent and make happen exactly what I had hoped was possible for a web site to achieve. It is fortunate that boating is such a pretty business and boaters tend to be community oriented. It is a very good example of the product being a good match with the blog concept.

I am excited as hell to see the completed site but I'm so in love with our intermediate site that I might fight to keep it when it's time to roll it in. The blues blend beautifully and the shadow affect is classy and adds to the mood. Yup, we might duke it out on that one... :>)

Many thanks gentlemen.

We're truly pleased you like the intermediate design and we thank you for your kind words. Although it means a loss in editing revenue, we agree that a blog provides the power to control your own website, without needing a dedicated web team. At the end of the day, a website, like any tool, should work for you as best it can and not the other way around. We simply strive to provide our clients with the best tools.

Regardless, we're going to win the bet! ;)
